Adventure Learning Tools & Definitions
High Ropes Courses and Climbing
Walls
High ropes obstacles and climbing walls pose challenges
to the individual. They present tests of physical strength, stamina,
agility, balance, and flexibility, and they invite participants to confront
such emotional issues as the fear of heights, the fear of failure, and
the fear of losing control.
They require participants to draw upon reserves of
courage and strength and to re-examine assumptions about their physical
and emotional limitations. Conducted within a context of group encouragement
and support, these programs often lead participants to a heightened
awareness of self and to an increase of confidence and self-esteem.
Group Iniatives and Low
Ropes Courses
So-called "group initiatives," involving
real and imaginary ground-based obstacles, present physical, mental,
and emotional challenges that invite a group to explore teamwork strategies
and demonstrate for themselves the importance of planning, cooperation,
and communication.
Through a series of adventure games and ground-level
group initiative obstacles, participants will be invited to explore
teamwork strategies and demonstrate for themselves the importance of
planning, cooperation, and communication in pursuit of common goals.
Success will depend not only upon individual strengths but upon creativity,
tenacity, strategic planning, shared risk taking, the allocation of
group resources, and the ability of the group to create a climate in
which individuals are able to trust each other and in which each member's
contributions are recognized and valued.
Wilderness Trips: Mountaineering,
Rock Climbing, Whitewater Rafting, Backpacking, Sea Kayaking
Intended for those teams seeking performance excellence.
Intense day or multi-day programs use outdoor activities like whitewater
rafting, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, mountaineering, or backpacking
as vehicles to explore group process, examine personal motivations and
behavior patterns, and develop leadership potential. Team members practice
successful behaviors and develop skills that can be applied directly
back to the work place. Programs can be designed as a team building experience
for intact work teams or for individuals as part of a leadership awareness
and development process.
